KIDS SPEAK

We believe that a great majority of our visitors have had their own children and are now deeply attached to their grandchildren. Some of us see their 'grandies' frequently whilst others will only have an opportunity to catch up on special occasions. Whatever the scenario may be, it seems inevitable that the little ones will be saying a sentence or two which undoubtedly will make us smile or break out in laughter. Over time we have heard some terrific 'classics' and each time we revisit the event, we start smiling again.

Children are unique, in particular when they are at ease with your presence and have no fear of speaking up. As curly as some comments may be, you really can not help but have a good laugh or cry.

This section is aiming to establish a collection of gems from "babe's mouths" and we really hope that you can help and contribute with some timeless quotes you have heard or read. Don't be too shy to mention your first name or the name and age of the child, but it is not a requirement for having your "kids speak" submissions published here.

The first contribution to this section came from 'Merri' (27/9/05) who sent us the following. When you read it, just imagine how the mind of these cuties works. It is something that all of us find very engaging and rewarding.Thank you 'Merri'.

During a test some professional people posed the question "What does love mean?" to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds. The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." (Rebecca - age 8)

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."  (Billy- age 4)

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other."  (Karl - age 5)

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."  (Chrissy - age 6)

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."  (Terri - age 4)

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."  (Danny - age 7)

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss."  (Emily - age 8)

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."  (Bobby - age 7)    Wow!

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,"  (Nikka - age 6)   We need a few million more Nikka's on this planet!

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." (Noelle - age 7)

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."  (Tommy - age 6)

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore." (Cindy - age 8)

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."  (Clare - age 6)

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."  (Elaine-age 5)

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford." (Chris - age 7)

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."  (Mary Ann - age 4)

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." (Lauren - age 4)

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (Karen - age 7)    What an image!

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross." (Mark - age 6)

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."  (Jessica - age 8)
And the final one -- was the result of a contest to find the most caring child. The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbour was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there... When his mother asked what he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry!"

Brenda J. sent us the following little beauty :

"Our grand-daughter's kindy teacher asked my husband if he would be Father Christmas at the break-up. Our grand-daughter
stood at the side of him and then said to the teacher, "Father Christmas sounds just like my grandad." The teacher said, " It is so nice that he sounds like everybody's grandad." We always thought that our grand-daughter had guessed, until one day when we were going past the park where they had had their party and the grand-daughter said, " This is where Father Christmas came, and he left his reindeer in that shed there!"

This cute story comes from Denise S.:

Tessa, my 8-year-old grand daughter, has always known her Nanna to have a nice garden. Since selling my home and renting, I no longer have a garden to speak of. I had sent a photo to show her how much the yard sloped down to the fence line. The next time
I spoke to her, her remarks astounded me.
"Nanna, would you like me to bring some seeds when I come down?" she asked.
"Well, yes", I replied, still not sure why she was asking this.
"You haven't got a garden and I thought that if I brought some seeds, you could start one."
Rather than seeing the yard as being steep, she saw it as being bare, requiring some trees and flowers to make it look nice.

This contribution came from Charlie:

A number of primary schools were doing a project on "The Sea."
The children were asked to draw pictures or write about their experiences. Teachers got together to compare the results and put together some of the 'better' answers:

"This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight testicles."   (Kelly age 6)

"Some fish are dangerous. Jellyfish can sting. Electric eels can give you a shock. They have to live in caves under the sea where I think they have to plug themselves into chargers."  (Christopher age 7)

"Oysters' balls are called pearls."  (James age 6)

"If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island. If you don't have sea all around you, you are in continent."  ( Wayne age 7)

"I think sharks are ugly and mean, and have big teeth, just like Emily Richardson. She's not my friend no more."  (Kylie age 6)

"A dolphin breathes through an asshole on the top of its head."   (Billy age 8)

"My uncle goes out in his boat with pots, and comes back with crabs."
(Millie age 6)

"When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean. Sometimes, when the wind didn't blow, the sailors would whistle to make the wind come. My brother said they would be better off eating beans."
(William age 7)

"I like mermaids. They are beautiful, and I like their shiny tails. How do mermaids get pregnant?"   (Helen age 6)

"When you go swimming in the sea, it is very cold, and it makes my willy shrink."
(Kevin age 6)

"I'm not going to write about the ocean. My baby brother is always crying, my Dad keeps yelling at my Mom, and my big sister has just got pregnant, so I can't think what to write." (Amy, age 6)

"Divers have to be safe when they go under the water. Divers can't go down alone, so they have to go down on each other." (Becky  8)

"On vacation my Mom went water skiing. She fell off when she was going very fast. She says she won't do it again because water fired
right up her big fat ass." (Julie, age 7)

"The ocean is made up of water and fish. Why the fish don't drown I don't know."  (Bobby, age 6)

"My dad was a sailor on the ocean. He knows all about the ocean. What he doesn't know is why he quit being a sailor and married my mom."
  (James, age 7)
