PETS  &  VETS

"Animals are such agreeable friends -
they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms."

Welcome to the pets and their problems page! Just joking!

Most of us have a pet or two, and we know that they can cause the odd inconvenience.
Apart from some larger pets eating us out of our home and retirement funds, we do have the occasional vet bill to pay. Vets are often costing us more than our pets, they do need to keep our little friends in good shape and that does make up for spending a few dollars to support them.

We are very interested to learn about your experiences with your pets and vets. Good, bad or Indifferent that doesn't matter. Please tell us what type of pets do you love and keep. Anything from little pigs to snakes and crocodiles are now considered a pet. Pity those of you who do have to take their 4 meter croc for a daily walk!
As mentioned above, vets do have their parts in our stories and therefore they qualify for inclusion in your submissions.

Some the other pages under this heading will contain information which we hope could benefit your pet. There are also many links to other sites where you could find assistance to keep your
pets healthy and active.
Please send all your contributions to our email address and don't be too shy to include a photo of yourself and your pet(s).

Just a couple of tricks to keep your pets happy: (Please keep sending us your tips / tricks)

Flea killer            Dishwashing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath
and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations.
                              Goodbye fleas.

Dog odour          Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal
with "Bounce" or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell
                              springtime fresh.

Ear mites           All it takes is a few drops of corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, and
then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for three days. The oil soothes
the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Fur balls             To prevent troublesome hairballs, apply a dollop of Vaseline petroleum
jelly to your cat's nose. The cat will lick off the jelly, lubricating any hair in
its stomach so it can pass easily through the digestive system.

People trigger pet asthma:
For years, household pets have been blamed for triggering allergies and asthma, but research this week accused owners of causing the same troubles in their animals. Vets
say cigarette smoke, human dandruff and dusty houses can contribute to breathing problems in their family cat. Certain types of cat litter and pollen brought into the home can also bring on an attack. About one in 200 felines suffer from asthma. A team of clinicians at Edinburgh University' Hospital for Small Animals are looking at the condition in cats.

Exotic plants are killing pets!

Did you know that exotic plants are not just harming Australia's landscape but can kill pets and costing owners millions of dollars each year?
Chris Brown, veterinarian and author, claims that the following plants are responsible for some of these facts:
Lillies, Lantana, Brunsfelsia, Paterson's curse, St.John's wort, Fireweed, ryegrass, red and
green cestrum, wandering jew, cottoneaster, oleanders, azaleas and poinsettias. Even
macadamia nuts can be toxic to our pets.
